How to overtake traffic
Pick a lane, take the gap, miss by inches, lift before the wall. Crashes reset the payout.
OVERTAKE pays you to pass traffic without becoming traffic. The loop is simple: a clean pass raises a cash multiplier, a near-miss helps that climb, and a crash resets it to nothing. Most new players treat the highway like a demolition derby, then wonder why earn cash feels slow after they already claimed codes. This page is lane choice, when to commit, when to lift, and how to protect a combo in a 15-player server.
You need a car that restarts. If F still fails in Neutral, stop here and finish manual transmission. A stalled engine in the middle of a pass is a crash with extra steps.
What counts as a clean pass
Commit to one target. Move over, complete the pass, return to a stable lane. Do not sideswipe. Do not park in their blind spot. The game is a no-hesi cut-up, not a contact league. If you bounce off a bumper, assume the multiplier is gone even if you kept moving.
Near-misses are the bonus for doing that close without paint. You want the gap to feel rude and still be a miss. If you need the handbrake P to avoid them, you were already late. Brake with S, or lift W, before the hole disappears.
Chains pay. One pass is a tick. Five clean passes in a row is why VIP and group boosts matter — they multiply a number that is still alive. A single wreck returns you to base cash no matter what you spent on upgrades.
Lane choice
Pick the lane with a visible exit, not the lane with the flashiest car. On a three-lane stretch, the middle is a trap if both neighbors are slower than you: you will have to cut one of them. Outside lanes give you a shoulder of sorts and one side of traffic to read.
Look two cars ahead, not at the bumper you are beside. The close car is the pass you already chose. The next car decides whether that pass is still legal in two seconds. Camera C should show that second car. If your view is a hood close-up of your own paint, change it in a straight using the controls map.
Do not change lanes into a player. Humans in a 15-player server do not follow AI spacing. If another driver is already in the hole, lift. Fighting them is a crash with an audience.
When to lift
Lift when:
- The gap is shrinking, not growing.
- A third car is filling the landing lane.
- You would need full lock plus handbrake to finish.
- You just took a near-miss and the multiplier is fat — greed is how combos die.
- You are in the wrong gear and the engine is falling on its face. Downshift with Q before the hole, or abort.
Lifting is not losing. A saved 8x that takes the next three AI cars beats a dead 12x against a barrier. The title is OVERTAKE, not OVERCOMMIT.
Throttle again only when the wheels are straight. Adding W while the car is still sideways is how near-misses become wrecks.
Protecting the multiplier
After a good pass, stabilize. Center the car, upshift with E if you are screaming, glance with V, then pick the next target. Instant second dives are how people clip the car they just passed.
If you tag something, treat the combo as dead. Recover: Neutral, F, throttle, shift, then a boring stretch to rebuild. Do not “save” a wrecked run by forcing another cut. That is two resets.
Shop, radio X, and menu R wait until you are parked. Opening codes mid-combo is a self-wreck. Redeem before you hunt, as in getting started.
Night, rain, or a busy server are reasons to take fewer, cleaner passes — not reasons to drive closer. The Tuning-era garage can make a car nervous; if a new part made you twitchy, read tuning and back off the stiffest option until your hands catch up.
Reading AI versus players
AI traffic holds lines longer. You can plan a two-car chain on them. Players brake randomly, sit in the passing lane, and sometimes hunt you. If a human is playing chicken, you lose the multiplier either way — lift first. There is no bounty for sending them into the wall.
Use the starter cars until your lift timing is honest. A pack car from car packs only arrives at the crash faster. VIP multiplies whatever combo you keep, including zero.
Lift before the gap closes. A saved multiplier pays more than a last-second squeeze that paints the barrier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for highway runs, codes, and tuning.
What raises the OVERTAKE multiplier?
Clean passes. Near-misses help. A crash resets it. Practice the commit-and-stabilize loop on this page, then cash it out with earn cash.
Should I use the handbrake to cut a gap?
Almost never. P is for lots and spin recovery. Lane choice and a lift beat a handbrake slide. Binds are on controls.
I keep stalling in the middle of a pass.
You are in the wrong gear or you never restarted after a clip. Neutral, F, throttle, shift — manual transmission.
Do other players affect my combo?
Yes. Servers hold 15 people. If a human is in your hole, lift. Fighting them is a reset. First-hour habits are on getting started.
Does a faster car make overtakes easier?
Should I open Shop during a combo?
No. Redeem codes while parked. A focused text field eats WASD and ends the run.
